What are these myths about Google?

Myth 1: Google does not make any money

Google has many online services. To name a couple, there is Gmail, Google Earth, Google Maps, Google News, etc. All of these are free for people to use. Other companies have assumed Google has no business model, therefore does not make any profit.

Fact: In 2008, Google made around $22 billion, 97% of which came from advertising. How, you ask? Well, Google has developed two highly profitable advertising models:

  • Google AdWords– Advertisements that appear during Google searches above and beside the main search result. These are also known as “Sponsored links”. The advertiser for these ads pays Google only when someone clicks on the ad.
  • Google AdSense- This is similar to AdWords, however, the text ads surface on non-Google websites. If you are a website owner and want to earn advertisement revenue, you can sign up with Google AdSense. Every time a site visitor clicks on one of your (the website owner) ads, the advertiser pays Google, then Google pays you! Google AdSense is where you place your Google product listings for anything you want to sell, a business you are running, or a product that you are selling.

Myth 2: Google is making society dumb

There was a time when society did not have Google to look for answers to questions they had. Now days, any question that comes to mind can be answered through Google. However, people have been blaming technology for society’s stupidity since day one.

Fact: In anything, Google has made us more intelligent by giving us instant answers and instant access to the entire world’s knowledge. With Google, we can gather information by only skimming and link jumping; however, that is not a bad thing! Google has given us many opportunities to “turn our worlds upside down” by allowing us to do things on our own. We do not need to search for a book to look for an answer, now, we have search engines and search boxes to do it for us. Google has given us the pleasure of helping us start our own business and helps make things easier for us by giving us the option to use the Google product listing for our companies.

Myth 3: Google knows everything about us

Google’s’ data center (located in one of Arkansas industrial parks) has billions of gigabytes of information. Yes, Google paints a picture of who you are and where you live; however, it does not know everything about you as a person.

Fact: Google knows where you live because of the IP address on your computer. Your computers IP address gives Google a vague geographic location of where your searches are coming from, not a name and address. According to Google’s representatives, there is nothing personally identifiable about your data that Google can actually analyze.
